Farwell Texas

Farwell is the county seat of Parmer County. The town was named after the brothers Charles B. and John V. Farwell. The Farwell brothers were two men who helped transform the cow country of the old west into a country of small farms. The town of Farwell was surveyed in 1905.

The townsite was located at the point where the Pecos Valley and Northern Texas Railway entered New Mexico on land originally part of the XIT Ranch.

About Farwell, TX

In 1905 nearly 586 acres of land were included in a grant by the Capitol Freehold Land Investment Company of Chicago, Illinois, and were set aside for the city of Farwell. This grant was made and signed by Sir William Ewart of Belfast, Ireland, and the honorable Sir Herbert Maxwell, of London, England, trustees for the company. It was specified that the land was to be subdivided into blocks and streets. The Pecos and Northern Texas Railroad Company tracks were the dividing line between the Texas and New Mexico Stateline. December 10, 1907, the county seat was moved from Parmerton Hill to Farwell. The new courthouse was built, and officials moved into the building in 1917.

Old Rock Church in Farwell Texas 1907

The old rock church built in 1907 doubled as a public school until separate facilities were built in 1910. A post office was established in 1906.

First National Bank of Farwell 1908

In 1908 the First National Bank of Farwell was chartered, and the Santa Fe Railroad established a freight depot, warehouse, and coal yard on the Texas side. B. F. Fears started publication of the State Line Tribune by 1910
